If you have a car then you may be able to make money with Uber. CashLady takes a closer look at the process of becoming an Uber driver, including any tests and licensing you will need to get started.
What is Uber?
Uber markets itself as a ‘convenient, inexpensive and safe taxi service’.
Through the Uber app, passengers connect with drivers directly, rather than by hailing a taxi or via a centralised booking system.
There are various types of Uber, including UberX, UberExex and UberLux.
In order to become an Uber driver and to start to make money with Uber, you will need to make sure that you have the right car.
Are Uber drivers self-employed?
All Uber drivers in the UK are currently self-employed. However, a London employment tribunal recently ruled Uber drivers were not self-employed but were actually workers.
Uber has said that it will appeal the ruling.
Where is Uber available?
Uber is available in various towns and cities across the UK. These include London, Belfast, Cardiff, Newcastle and Sheffield.
What type of vehicle do I need to make money with Uber?
In order to begin to make money with Uber, you will need a car that is a 2008 model or newer.
Uber has a comprehensive list of suitable models on its website. This list includes the Uber category your car would fit into. For example, if you had an Audi A7, your car would fit into the UberX category. However, if your Audi A7 was a 2014 model or newer, you could work in the UberExec category.
What can I do if I do not have a vehicle that I can use with Uber?
If your car does not meet Uber’s requirements, you could rent an Uber-approved vehicle.
Are there any minimum requirements for becoming an Uber driver?
In order to become an Uber driver, you must be at least 21 years old and have a full driving licence. (You should have been driving for at least 3 years.) You must also have the right to work in the UK.
What kind of driving licence do I need to become an Uber driver?
To make money with Uber, you will need a Private Hire Vehicle licence (PHV). Applications for this type of licence can be made through your local council. How much it will cost to get a PHV licence varies, depending on where you live.
As part of your PHV licence application, your vehicle must be inspected.
If you want to be an Uber driver inside London, your vehicle must be inspected and licensed by TFL. Except for a few exemptions, all vehicles must be no more than five years old to qualify for a PHV licence.
If you want to become an Uber driver outside of London, your vehicle must be inspected and licensed by your local council.
As part of your PHV licence, you may need to undergo checks such as a Criminal Records Bureau check, a medical and an interview.
It should take between 2-6 weeks to get your licence through, although it can take significantly longer.
Do I need to take a test to become an Uber driver?
To become an Uber driver, you will need to fill in their application form and then undergo a half day training course. This is called an ‘Uber Ignition session’.
During this session, you will learn about how to apply for a PHV licence and what it may be like to work for Uber. This will also include training for the maps test that you will need to sit before you can start working with Uber.
What are the insurance requirements?
Insurance cover for ‘business use’ tends to be more expensive than insurance for ‘domestic use’. It is also more pricey because you are not usually able to carry your ‘no claims’ bonus across to ‘business use’ insurance.
Your insurance will need to include public liability because you are driving around fare-paying passengers.
How much money can you make with Uber?
There are no minimum hours that you have to work with Uber, so how much you work and how much you make depends on you.
The main expense Uber drivers have to budget for is their petrol costs.
How much does Uber charge?
Uber drivers must pay 25% of each fare to Uber.
Drivers can also choose to pay £5 per week for a company phone with a sat nav built in.
How do I get my money from Uber?
Uber gives drivers their ‘wages’ on a weekly basis, after taking their 25% cut. The money should automatically go into your bank account and you should receive an invoice showing the trips you have taken each week.
Make money with Uber on your own terms
As an Uber driver, you can drive at times that are convenient for you, making it a very flexible job. There are no set hours and no office that you have to be in. This means that you can make as much money as you want when you want.
If you want to make money with Uber, there are a few things you will need to do first.
You should check your vehicle meets Uber’s requirements or, you could rent a vehicle through Uber’s marketplace.
You will also need to get ‘business insurance’ for your vehicle and apply for a PHV licence that will allow you to pick up fare-paying passengers.
Factoring in petrol costs and Uber’s service fee is also important so that you can better budget.
At first glance, the process can seem daunting. However, once you have completed it, you should be able to make money with Uber.
