Disappointed Wetherspoons customers took to social media on Tuesday to bemoan the lack of red meat at the popular pub chain’s weekly ‘Steak Club’ nights.
The result of a serious supplier failure, disgruntled customers were surprised to learn that sirloin steak, Aberdeen Angus rump steak and gammon had been dropped from the menu across all 900 Wetherspoons locations in the UK.
As reported in the Mirror, a notice apparently pictured at one pub read:
“Due to a supplier failure, the following meals are unavailable: 8oz and 14oz Aberdeen Angus rump steak, 8oz sirloin steak, 5oz and 10z gammon.
“We are still able to offer our Mixed grill and large mixed grill meals, but they will be served with a grilled chicken breast instead of the Aberdeen Angus rump steak.”
Unhappy customers took to Twitter in their droves to complain about the surprising lack of steak, which is usually available for as little as £7 on a Tuesday, including chips, peas, tomato, mushroom and a drink.
Instead of steak, customers were offered vegetarian alternatives or chicken, while the Sun reports that some diners had menus taken from their hands as news of the supplier problem broke.

“A supplier failure”
Russell Hume, a Wetherspoons meat supplier, was ordered to stop all deliveries after investigators discovered suspected ‘serious non-compliance’ with food safety rules when they visited first premises on 12 January.
The Food Standards Agency stated Russell Hume’s sites were inspected and products recalled after allegations it was in “serious non-compliance with food hygiene regulations”.
The firm has previously supplied meat for Jamie Oliver’s restaurants, but a spokesperson for the Italian themed restaurant chain confirmed that they changed suppliers as soon as they became aware of problems.
Following a tip-off, the FSA carried out a spot check on the firm’s Birmingham site and then sent teams to other locations across the UK, including Wales and Scotland, which also failed to meet regulations.
The FSA said:
“There is no indication that people have become ill from eating meat supplied by Russell Hume.
“However, we are concerned about the poor practices in place at their premises so that is why we have taken proportionate action to ensure no meat can leave their sites at present.
We are continuing to assess the situation.”
The company that reportedly has an annual turnover of more than £50 million, also supplies meat to popular eateries Tiger Tiger, Greene King and Marston’s pubs, along with various holiday firms, care homes and schools.
A Wetherspoons spokesman said the chain was ‘completely unaware’ of the FSA’s inspection or findings until now.
In a statement, Russell Hume said:
‘The product recall was a precautionary measure because of mislabelling. ‘We have no reason to believe that the product was unsafe to eat.’
