Independent arts charity BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, has revealed its nominations for the British Academy Games Awards 2018.

45 games recognised

With a total of 45 games recognised, including Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, What Remains of Edith Finch and Horizon Zero Dawn, BAFTA says that the awards showcase the “very best games” of the last 12 months and highlight an “outstanding level” of creative excellence of teams both in the UK and abroad.

Forming part of the London Games Festival, which is taking place in less than a month’s time from 5 to 15 April and will include 40 events across London, the awards are voted for by BAFTA’s global membership, which comprises experienced games industry practitioners with backgrounds in production and game development.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice “leads the way”

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, has received 9 nominations, the most out of all the games recognised, including Best Game, Game Beyond Entertainment and Artistic Achievement.

New category ‘Game Beyond Entertainment’

Life is Strange: Beyond the Storm, which tackles issues which are not often dealt with in games, such as love, bullying and friendship, is one such game to be nominated for this category, as well as Sea Hero Quest VR, which contributes to dementia research through gameplay.

Mobile game Bury Me, My Love, about a couple separated by the conflict in Syria, has also been nominated for an award in the Game Beyond Entertainment Category.
