Poor lighting is a major cause of bad photos, however, the Huawei P20 Pro, a new Chinese smartphone can ‘see in the dark,’ allowing users to get that perfect shot.

Likely to capture the attention of Instagram lovers and food bloggers everywhere, the new Huawei P20 Pro smartphone, features three cameras and is powered with artificial intelligence, providing clear photos in darkness without the need for a tripod.

Set to shake up the European smartphone market, the brand currently sits in third place behind Samsung and Apple but its phones aren’t available in the US.

US telecom networks’, AT&T and Verizon pulled out of talks to sell its devices, with reports suggesting politicians pressured the telecom operators not to work with the firm due to suspected ties to the Chinese government.

Richard Yu, chief executive of Huawei’s consumer products division, told the BBC that the Americans feared his company was “too competitive [and] too strong”.

“A threat to other smartphone makers,”

With competitive pricing and ambitious plans to become the world’s leading smartphone brand, one industry-watcher has suggested that rivals should take note.

“Huawei is going to throw everything that it’s got at Europe now, because it needs to make up the sales volume expectation that it had in the US,” Ben Wood, from CCS Insight, told the BBC.

“Other smartphone-makers should be seriously concerned that the threat it poses has just been dialled up a whole order of magnitude as it’s just released up resources and money to resolve some of its brand issues.”

How does the Huawei P20 Pro work?

Huawei has launched three new phones – the Huawei P20, the Huawei P20 Lite and the Huawei P20 Pro but it’s the latter that has caught the world’s attention.

Offering a specially designed, ‘night mode,’ it takes exposures lasting up to six seconds to get enough light. Typically, this long exposure requires the use of a tripod due to camera shake, which can make images blurry.

The Huawei P20 Pro, however, has incorporated an AI image stabilisation feature, letting users snap handheld night shots, without any blur, using its ability to distinguish objects to find the optimum frame for each item contained in a shot.

Using AI, it cleverly works out what users are taking a photo of and then adjusts its camera settings accordingly.

The Sun reports that Huawei teamed up with food photographers to work out the best settings for snapping different scenes, including food, cats, greenery, portraits and fireworks.

According to the newspaper, the phone can even distinguish Chinese food from dessert.

Other features offered by the new handset include a dedicated portrait mode that adds a blurred background that brings the subject into focus, along with a ‘super zoom,’ which according to a Huawei spokesperson means that the phone can “zoom into a 5x distance without any…degradation at all”.

Where can you get the Huawei P20 Pro?

The good news is that the Huawei P20 Pro is now available for pre-order in the UK at leading phone providers, including Carphone Warehouse and Vodaphone.
