If you want to make money online as a freelancer, there are many different things you can do. CashLady examines the sites and job roles that you can manage from the comfort of your own home.
What does an online freelancer do?
There are many different roles that freelancers can carry out over the internet. Generally, these are jobs that people or businesses do not have the skills, time or inclination to undertake themselves.
If you have access to the internet, you can use your skills to work online.
How does working online actually work?
Normally, an individual or a company will post a job on a freelancing website. You are then able to apply for any project that you are interested in.
In your application or bid, you would include why you are the right person for the job, together with the price you would charge to complete the work. On many websites, these proposals are only visible to the individual or business who is doing the hiring. You will not usually know what price other freelancers have given to undertake the work.
Sometimes, the hirer for the project will give a fixed price they will pay for the project to be completed. Other times, they will not give a fixed price and it is up to you to bid an amount that you will take on the work for.
The person who posted the project will then choose which one of the proposals they would like to accept.
Some freelancing websites allow you to post a fixed price service that people can purchase. For example, if you were a graphic designer, you could sell a business logo design for a fixed price of £50.
What kind of work can I make money online with?
There are many different things that you can do to make money online.
Translation and article writing
In the days when an internet presence is essential, many businesses need people to write articles for their blogs. Also, content for their website.
Social media management – where you manage a business’ social media – is also a skill many businesses look for.
If you are fluent in another language, translation work can be a lucrative market and is less competitive than writing in English.
If your spelling and grammar are tip-top, you could also consider advertising yourself as a proofreader.
This is a bit harder to get into but many companies are looking for good graphic designers for things such as presentations, videos and logos.
You will need to have the right software and be able to use it well. But if you are willing to learn and able to afford the initial outlay, this can be a great way to make money online.
Administration or Virtual PA work
Some businesses do not have the space or the money to hire a member of staff specifically for administration duties.
Tasks typically include transcription and PA duties. Such as, answering phones and planning travel schedules.
If you are organised and do not mind some repetitive tasks, this could be a good way to make money online.
These are just some of the jobs you could do to make money online. Others include online research, programming and data analysis.
Make a list of your skills and see what you think you could do. If you do not know how to do something, the internet is full of resources to help you learn.
Where can I find work online?
There are various websites out there that are focused on freelancing work.
Here are just a few of them:
PeoplePerHour is a UK based company that provides a website enabling freelancers and businesses or individuals, looking for talent, to link with each other.
On PeoplePerHour, businesses post jobs for freelancers to bid on. You are also able to sell your services for a fixed price through an ‘hourlie’.
Freelancer is an Australian online marketplace connecting businesses with freelancers. Although freelancers and businesses that use it come from all over the world.
fiverr is another site enabling businesses and freelancers to link with each other.
On this website, freelancers are able to post their services in specific categories. Businesses can then search them for an appropriate freelancer.
Research the different freelancing websites to find out which one is best for the area you intend to work in. You may even decide to advertise your services on a number of marketplaces until you find out which one works best for you.
How do I get paid?
Once you have completed the job, you will usually need to invoice the hirer via the freelancing website’s own invoicing system.
Some websites, such as PeoplePerHour, have an ‘Escrow’ system that safely holds the hirer’s deposit. This is usually while you undertake the work, in the case of any disputes.
Other websites may use an hourly system where you essentially ‘clock in’ to work and invoice as such.
Most websites will allow you to transfer any money earned directly to your bank account. Many websites will take some sort of cut of your earnings (usually a fixed percentage) before you can transfer them out. It is worth looking at a freelancing website’s payment terms to make sure you are happy before you sign up.
Freelancing is a good way to make money online.
There are many different things you can do and you should look at your skill set and decide where you want to focus your time and effort.
The internet is also a great place to learn something new, with a view to making money using those skills in the future.
Finally, make sure you research any freelancing website you are thinking of using. Mostly, to ensure that you are happy with all of their terms and conditions.
