Getting a facial in a salon or buying a pre-made face mask from your local chemist can be expensive. By making your own DIY face mask, you can not only save money but your skin could also benefit from the natural ingredients. Many of which you may already have in your kitchen cupboards.
Why use face masks at all
Face masks are a great addition to any skincare routine. Different masks serve different purposes. They can have a focus on everything from hydration to exfoliation to detoxification. Whatever your skin care concern, whether it’s oily skin or large pores, the right face mask can help you to address it.
Ideally, you should use a face mask at least once a week, although if your skin is very dry, for example, you could use a moisturising mask more often.
A DIY face mask is a great way to relax
Not only can a face mask benefit your beauty regime by making your skin look great, it can also be a great way of relaxing after a hard day at work.
Simply place a mask on your face and leave it there for the prescribed amount of time (usually around 15 to 30 minutes). By doing this, you are forcing yourself to have a bit of ‘you’ time.
It doesn’t matter where you choose to relax. It could be in the bath with your favourite book or in front of your best-loved soap on the box. By smoothing a face mask into your skin, you can relax while it works its magic.
It’s important to ensure that your skin is clean before applying your DIY face mask, so make sure that you wash your face beforehand.
Do a patch test
Some people find that various ingredients can irritate their skin. If you are worried about how your skin might react to applying a face mask, you should do a patch test on a small area of skin. It is important to do this before applying your DIY face mask to your whole face.
DIY face mask for oily skin
If you have oily skin, you may be tempted to use face masks that have ingredients that promise to remove excess oil. Yet, this could actually cause your skin to overcompensate and produce more oil, exacerbating the problem.
It may sound crazy but including oil in your DIY face mask, could help to regulate the amount of oil your skin produces.
Cucumber, Lemon, Yoghurt and Coconut Oil
Coconut oil not only has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties but is also a great moisturiser to help stop your skin from feeling tight. The lactic acid in yoghurt also makes this mask a great exfoliator and could help those with acne-prone skin.
- 2 x slices of cucumber
- 0.5 tbsp of extra virgin coconut oil
- 0.5 tbsp of lemon juice
- 1 tbsp of yoghurt
Using a mortar and pestle, combine the ingredients together to make a paste.
If you do not have a mortar and pestle, chop the cucumber into as small pieces as possible and mash it together with the other ingredients.
Apply the paste to your clean skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes, before rinsing it off with warm water. Pat your face dry with a towel.
DIY face mask for dry, tired skin
If you have sensitive skin, DIY face masks are a great way of avoiding chemicals that are sometimes in off-the-shelf face masks.
Avocado is packed full of unsaturated fats and minerals and is great for soothing dry skin.
Honey Avocado face mask
This DIY face mask could be a great choice for those who suffer from dry skin, as the honey is really moisturising, too.
It could also benefit those with more mature skin and could help your skin to look younger, by ensuring it has the moisture it craves.
And the ingredients really are good enough to eat (before you put them on your face, of course!).
- 1 x ripe avocado
- 1.5 tbsp of honey
Cut open your avocado, remove the stone and then scoop out the flesh.
Put this into a bowl with your honey. Mash the two ingredients together until they form a paste.
Apply this paste to your clean skin and then leave it there for 10 minutes.
Rinse your skin with warm water, then pat it dry with a towel.
Enjoy your glowing skin!
DIY face mask to help reduce the appearance of your pores
Although you are not able to actually make your pores smaller, you can make them look smaller.
Astringents, such as cucumber or lemon, can cause your skin to tighten and can reduce the appearance of your pores.
Egg white and lemon face mask
- 1 x egg white
- 0.5 tbsp of lemon juice
Separate an egg (add the yolk to an omelette for lunch!) and whisk the egg white until it is starting to froth.
Add the lemon juice and whisk until blended.
Apply the egg white and lemon juice mixture to your clean skin and leave for around 15 minutes (or until it is dry).
Rinse your face with warm water and pat dry.
DIY face mask to make your skin glow
Your skin will glow when it is properly hydrated.
Turmeric face mask
Turmeric has been hitting the headlines recently. Some research says that it could help with numerous skin conditions, such as acne and could even reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
- 1 tsp of turmeric
- 2 tbsp of milk or yoghurt
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 tsp coconut oil
Mix all your ingredients together until you have a paste which you can apply to your clean skin.
Leave on for 15 minutes, then wash off with warm water.
Be aware that turmeric can stain clothes and towels, so make sure that you rinse properly and use an old towel to dry your face, if necessary.
DIY face masks are an inexpensive and natural alternative to chemical-filled, pre-made face masks. Many of them use store-cupboard ingredients that you may already have in your home.
